The Best of All Time!
Who knew??
An Explosion of Lightening
I was five feet from the stage. To be that close to such raw talent was like standing next to an explosion of lightening. West Virginia native Sierra Ferrell and her touring quartet of mandolin, fiddle, and double bass graced the stage of the Mercury Lounge this past Saturday night. Her boot stomping and percussive guitar rounded out the rhythm section. Promoting her album “Long Time Coming,” Ferrell showcased her unique blend of Appalachian roots country folk and Latin gypsy jazz. She stands about five feet tall, plus, a couple inches with her hair done up big. She was dressed like she stepped out of a French new wave film, but collided with a go-go dancer in a Southern honky tonk. Besides the amazing compositions, thoughtful, fun lyrics and the excitement of improvisational instrumental back and forth; it was Sierra Ferrell’s powerful voice that stole the show. Her timbre reminds one more of Loretta Lynn than anyone else, but it’s more accurate to say that her voice is uniquely her own while placing itself among the pantheon of classic country singers.
